It's not often that we quote from the chapter To Employers, in the book Alcoholics Anonymous, yet it is here we find the phrase "road to recovery" when the writer is telling us of the difficulty in bringing understanding to non-alcoholic bosses who are faced with the daunting task of managing the bewildering performance of active alcoholics. This quote comes along directly after an employer has had to terminate the employment of a man who had to drink again despite the threat of the loss of his job.
Here's the reading fragment from page 139: "Presently the man did slip and was fired. Following his discharge, we contacted him. Without much ado, he accepted the principles and procedure that had helped us. He is undoubtedly on the road to recovery."
When I think of the road to recovery, I also think about that part in the book where it talks about trudging the road to happy destiny on page 164. "We shall be with you in the Fellowship of the Spirit, and you will surely meet some of us as you trudge the Road of Happy Destiny."
For all of us, these phrases and quotes will bring up slightly different imagery, themes and ideas and yet here we are all on this similar road to recovery and beyond. I love that we are going to meet each other for sure as we hit the roads (and airways) around Australia and the world to converge on Adelaide at Easter in 2024. That, for sure, is Happy Destiny.
